See the Good! / mixed media

Mixed media is whenever you use more than one medium: i.e. watercolor and pencil, or charcoal and Indian ink, but to me it mostly means collage, gluing on scraps of paper or other materials to a background surface. How grateful I am to ol' Picasso and Braque for coming up with the notion of collage back in 1913 or so!

I have been making collages since I can remember. There is nothing so satisfying as moving around bits of paper and seeing them - click! - into the perfect place for me. Lately I have been using monoprints (also called monotypes, unique one-of-a-kind hand-printed images) as the backgrounds for my collages. Doing the monoprints is inspired play, and later adding the collage elements is just more fun! Many of my collages have handwritten sayings or quotes enhancing them.

In anticipation of the August 2010 THREE FOOT SQUARE exhibit at the Center for Spiritual Living Morristown which I shared with Penny Wise, I created five new mixed media pieces, this time on larger-format canvases. Read the article from The Daily Record 8/6/10 by Bill Nutt.

My most recent work was created for Spring 2011 THE STRENGTH OF WOMEN: THE UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF WOMEN ARTISTS exhibit, which I was invited to take part in. Learn more on the Exhibits page. I enjoyed making the time to create several more mixed media pieces, all of which have quotes or sayings reminding us of ancient truths.
