|see the good||
I, Gail Mardfin, grew up in Connecticut, attended Skidmore College and graduated from Trinity College in Hartford. After moving to New Jersey in 1975, I earned a master’s in studio art from Montclair University. I was head of the art department at Purnell School in Pottersville for many years, teaching a myriad of art courses, before starting my own graphic design business in 1996, where I was the principal designer.
After living 40 years in New Jersey, which I thoroughly enjoyed, in 2015 I moved across the country to northern California and now live about fifteen minutes from my adorable granddaughter, Azalea. The pleasure is all mine as I care for this little one a few days a week and explore my new environment, which is quite different from the east coast!
In 2011, I cofounded ARTsee, an artists' network in Bernardsville-Basking Ridge NJ, which hosts an annual Open Studio Tour. Before moving west, I was an active member of the Center for Spiritual Living Morristown, NJ, where I headed up the Awaken International Film Festival for five years. I am also the loving parent of two adult children living creative lives of their own -- one of whom is the mother of Azalea.
For those who feel they must pigeonhole an artist’s “style” well, sorry. I taught ALL mediums of art for many years and there are so many things I love to do…I enjoy watercolor, photography, collage, and acrylic and mixed media painting. My subject matter, whether visual or text-based, has always been about SEEING THE GOOD, for I believe what we focus on, we get more of in our lives.
In about 2002, I developed a modern, stylized way of painting that was once described as "somewhere between a coloring book and stained glass." After selling nearly all of those paintings before I left NJ, I felt free to explore other approaches, and that is what you will find on my page of recent paintings. More recently I've been working in watercolor, using a build-up of layers to get a strong, bold look that feels like "me."
I belong to several art organizations in Sonoma County: The Artists' Round Table, the Santa Rosa Art Association, and AWS, the Art Workshop of Western Sonoma County.
Click to read a lovely interview about me and my art by Paula Pearce, which appeared in the AWS April 2019 Newsletter.
My personal aspiration is to live each day with awareness and joy. Showing up in the world as an artist helps fulfill this intent.

|about the artist|
Before moving west, one of my paintings was selected to be a part of "Gallery 24/7," an initiative by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission in New Jersey. Electrical boxes throughout the county were chosen to be wrapped with vinyl reproductions of works by artists. My "Daffodil Hill" was installed in Green Brook, NJ, on the corner of Washington Street and Green Brook Rd.
